The basenji is an ancient breed of dog and an original breed of dog. Unlike many of the pure bred dogs that are seen today, basenjis are not a “man made” breed. There was not breeding program to accentuate particular traits or to incorporate traits found in other breeds of dogs to create the basenji. (For example, many toy dogs were breed to smaller stock to create what we see today).
Basenjis originated in Africa and were of great importance to the bushmen. These small dogs were used, and in some cases still are used, to flush game from the bush. Because they do not bark they were often equipped with small bells made of wood and bones hung about the neck so that the bushmen could locate them. Of course the ability to hold their tongue would be a great asset in the jungle where there are many larger animals that would think a basenji would be a lovely snack!
It is also believed that African Chiefs gave their beloved dogs to Egyptian Pharaohs as gifts and basenjis are depicted in ancient Egyptian carvings and in the pyramids.
Because the basenji is typically not that far removed from the wilds, they still exhibit some of those primitive traits that will either make you love them or find them completely frustrating. They are not a dog for everyone.
Basenjis are a very independent breed. They are a sighthound, meaning they sight their prey and run it down. As such, basenjis are notorious for bolting out of an open door to chase a squirrel or other small creature. They tend to become “prey deaf” and will not heed calls from you to come back. For this reason, a basenji needs to be in secure surroundings at all times and care taken to insure that they do not get away.
Basenjis can be quite destructive if they get bored. It is imperative that they be crate trained so that your belongings do not become statistics.
Basenjis are very crafty and can figure out things rather well. Their persistence is to be admired. They can climb chain link, dig holes, and some have even been seen climbing trees! If you want a dog that is very challenging, a basenji could be just what you need. They keep you on your toes.
