Max's Story

Max came to live with us in the Spring of 2001. One night Brian called and told me to “Get out the biggest crate we have.” I of course asked why, and he told me that he had found a dog near the expressway and was bringing it home. He said he thought it was a chocolate Lab. I obliged and got out the biggest crate we had.
When Brian arrived home he had this beautiful young brown dog that was obviously a pit bull mix. Brian first said that he would take the dog to a shelter or animal control if we didn’t locate his owners. I told Brian that since he was a pit mix I was afraid that where ever he was taken would immediately put him down.
Max, as we came to know him because he was the “Maximus dog” in our house of basenjis, was found wearing just a chain choke collar and was very clean. He was obviously very cared for where ever he came from. Brian said he hopped right in his truck, just like he’d been waiting for him. Brian was afraid that since it was dark he would have been hit by a car on the expressway which was probably true.We ran ads for months, contacted the local shelters and veterinarians, watched for any ads in the papers and at local pet supply stores for lost dogs. Nothing. Max is a wonderful dog and Brian had always wanted a big dog. I told Brian that Max could stay if he got along with all the basenjis and if he didn’t drool everywhere.
Max gets along with everyone and is very friendly. He’s Brian’s main buddy and is really cool when he where’s his sunglasses in the car. Brian loves it as Max is the only obedient dog we have. I often joke that he should be a “real breed”.
Max crossed over the rainbow bridge in 2008 dues to cancer
